The easiest way to explain restorative dentistry is by this statement – it is the dental procedure to replace or repair a tooth. It has a pretty broad definition, but yes, any procedure that focuses on replacing or repairing a tooth is part of restorative dentistry. Patients could opt for restorative dentistry to save their teeth, restore the natural look of their teeth and overall mouth as the damaged teeth or missing teeth could easily impact them.
Here are some of the common restorative dentistry procedures.
1. Cavity filling
Cavity filling is one of the most common restorative dentistry procedures, and it is highly unlikely anyone has not heard of it. If the patient’s tooth has a cavity, which is formed due to bacteria creating a hole in the outer layer of the tooth, the inner part of the teeth needs to be protected immediately. It is done by filling the hole to protect the soft pulp, and this procedure is called cavity filling. The filling is made with composite materials that would be the same color as the tooth so that no one would be wiser about the cavity.
2. Root canal
If the cavity is too deep and the soft pulp inside the tooth is exposed, the cavity filling is not good enough in such a situation, and a root canal procedure is required. A root canal is done when the inside of the tooth is infected, the soft pulp has to be cleaned out, and the infection has to be rinsed from the inside. Once the infected tooth is cleaned, the gap is filled with a composite material. After this procedure, the tooth cannot become infected in the future ever again.
3. Crown
A Crown often referred to as a cap, is used to reinforce the teeth when it becomes damaged because of decay or if there is a break or crack in the tooth. The crown is perfectly shaped to fit the damaged tooth and then is placed on top of it. It will work just like a natural tooth with no one being wiser about it.
4. Dental implants
A dental implant is a procedure where the missing or damaged tooth is replaced with an artificial tooth. The implant in this procedure refers to the placement of the titanium root that is inserted inside the bone of the person’s jaw to form a solid hold on which the artificial root is placed. A dental implant is generally considered the best tooth-replacement option as the artificial tooth would look and function just like a normal tooth.
5. Bridge
The bridge is another procedure where an artificial tooth replaces the missing or damaged tooth. In this procedure, the artificial tooth is suspended between two crowns. The bridge is held by crowned teeth on either side of the gap or even by an implant.
6. Dentures
Dentures are one of the common ways for one to replace missing teeth, and there are two categories of dentures – complete dentures and partial dentures.
